If you are old enough, you have probably grown up around MTV. At that time it was the best channel for keeping up with the American music industry and its trends. This was also a time when dancehall influence on hip-hop was getting a lot of attention.

Orville Richard Burrell CD OJ, better known by his stage name Shaggy, is a Jamaican reggae musician, singer, DJ, and actor and this is the story of his famous hit “It Wasn’t Me”. It is pretty funny since I only realized it was about sex and being caught cheating long after I was singing my lungs out. I mean I saw the video clip but didn’t really understand English that good not to be able to understand Jamaican.

Nevertheless, it is very interesting to know the full story and what role a chance played in discovering and making this song a hit and therefore making Shaggy a superstar. Thank you VICE for making this series.
